The Astraeus Family
The Time Of Yenos
The First known member of the Astraeus family was Yakip Astraeus born 22264 (969 years before YC0) Yakip had a son called Yenos Astraeus, the first Astraeus holder.
At the time of Yenos the Astraeus family was already quite a rich family and they contributed quite a few mercenaries to the various war efforts of Amarr. It was due to their sacrifices in the wars that house Astraeus was awarded the honour of being holders under the Kor-Azor heirs.
Yenos kept expanding the influence of the Astraeus name, and over the course of his lifetime the family fortunes were almost doubled, helped much the the holder permit to trade in slaves.
The Succession Crisis
In 22385(848 years before YC0) a Astraeus holder by the name of Aapeli Astraeus died without a male heir. (At the time, the Astraeus family only passed the holder title to a legitimate male heir)
This was the starting shot to the greatest crisis in Astraeus history for another 300 years.
Dashiki Astraeus
Dashiki was the uncle of Aapeli and last surviving grandson of Yenos, at the advanced age of 76 he was already considered to be at the ending days of his life. Apart from that he was a well known supporter of anti-slavery something that made him quite unpopular in a family that had gained most of their wealth in extensive slave trading.
He was the legal heir of the Astraeus family as well as a very rich man with many connections in shadier places.
Maddock Astraeus
Maddock was one of many nephews of Aapeli. A young and very ambitious man, Maddock had used much of his life garnering connections both in the family and in other important Amarr families, as such he was the person the Kor-Azor heirs wanted to see set up as holder, even though they refused to actively take part in some small holder succession crisis as they called it.
He was considered a genius, and he was especially considered a prodigy in the military arts, and as such he managed to use his much smaller force to threaten that of Dashiki's.
(On a fun note, it is from this Maddock that the popular Astraeus compliment dates from, "He sure is a Maddock" is a way of saying that someone is overly smart or otherwise good at something)
Saburo Astraeus
For twenty years the century old, proud holder family was reduced to a pack of scheming nobles sending assassins and mercenaries after one another, and by the end, the families power had diminished to a point where the Kor-Azor heirs warned that further decline would result in the removal of the holder title. An event held off by the efforts of one single girl.
In 22407(826 years before YC0) the now adult daughter of Aapeli had used her inherited fortunes to amass a mercenary army so big that both Dashiki's and Maddock's factions had to stand down. She then appointed her infant son the holder.
Saburo would live as his mothers puppet until her death, 83 years old in 22469(764 years before YC0)
For more than two centuries, Saburo's line would yet again bring prosperity to house Astraeus.
The Fellowship of Enlightened Thought
The Fellowship of Enlightened Thought was a cult created in 22501(732 years before YC0)
It was led by the cousin of Saburo, Heladril Astraeus, who said that any real man was to worship Yenos as his god, and surprisingly enough the cult got quite a following both in and outside of the family.
For more than forty years the cult was allowed to thrive within the family until 22546(687 years before YC0) when the heir of Saburo, Octavos set out to redeem house Astraeus in the face of the true god.
But the cultists did not give up easily, when Heladril was assassinated, they simply used his death to raise him to some kind of prophet or saint to raise morale, but in a great battle of Perbhe in 22551(682 years before YC0) where the Amarr faithful within the family stood over the complete force of the fellowship. It was said to be one of the largest battle for years to come.
Octavos felt burdened by the sins of his kin, and decided to retire to meditate for the rest of his days. His son and heir Ufuk vowed to spend as many days hunting heresy as his father used hunting answers in his mediation. It was during the rule of Ufuk that a close bond was knitted between house Astraeus and the Theology Council that still exist to this day.
Some thirty years later in 22584(649 years before YC0) they died on the same day, in prayer to the one true divine.
A Bloody Death
Long after the problems with the Fellowship house Astraeus once more faced problems with heretics, although this time it was not from within.
The Holder at the time, the great-grandson of Ufuk, Galdrick Astraeus was captured by Sani Sabik cultists while touring a neighbouring system. Even the most loyal of his subjects did not dare believe that he could still be alive.
But five years after his son, Nadir had already taken over and officially become the new holder in 22692(541 years before YC0) a stranger walked into the palace in the holding on Shaha III, and claimed to be the missing holder Galdrick.
In this, not one of his former loyal subjects believed him, but even with all the warnings Nadir still went to meet this so called crazy man. Of course he recognised his father instantly and rushed to embrace him, and in that very second a bomb planted inside Galdrick by Sani Sabik exploded and sprayed the palace with the blood of two holders.
Just minutes after, the first blood raider ship landed. Sani Sabik captured several hundreds from the holding before fleeing as quickly as they had came.
The Second Succession Crisis
This once more threw the Astraeus family into a succession crisis. Nadir did not yet have sons, and had neither brothers nor sisters. The branch had died out, that meant that the title of holder went to Nadirs seventh cousin Hahn.
Many of the important figures from the other minor branches of Astraeus was not pleased with the fact that holder title had passed to such a distant relative, even considering the fact that none of them were in any closer relation to the dead main branch.
This of course ended with the assassination of Hahn in 22698(535 years before YC0)
It started a bloody feud inside the family comparable to the one three centuries before. But while it was not as self destructing as the great succession crisis of 22385, it lasted much, much longer.
In fact it would take almost a century before a member of house Astraeus could claim to be a holder once more.
