Can someone change

"A result was got, there is a Cosmic Signature of some sort in the system."

to

"The scan produced a result, indicating that a Cosmic Signature of some sort is present in the system"

Or something less... crappy.--Chrome Tsunami 11:15, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

-lateration vs. -angulation

I'd just like to point out that the new system uses quadrilateration (ie, using distances to find locations) instead of trianguation (ie, using angles to find locations), like is mentioned multiple times on this page.

Actually, I think its Trilateration, not quadrilateration
--Alezra 21:58, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Trilateration uses 3 spheres (hence tri) to find a location on a plane. In 3D space, 3 spheres will only narrow it down to two possible points (which you see in game when only 3 probes intersect), so technically the game doesn't use trilateration since 4 probes are required

After you have two solutions with Trilateration you're able to add a fourth sphere in order to eliminate one possible answer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilateration
Quadrilateration is the name of something completely different.

Also, this repeated reference to "triangulation" is increasing player frustration with the new system (http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1024488). Increased frustration with the new system decreases ingame fun. Calling it GPS or Radar would have been equally bad.
Ingame and inwiki it would therefore help to simply refer to the system as Quadrilation, as you said (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multilateration).

Two Pages?

This page seemed to have popped up. Is it really necessary to have this page with http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Exploration:_Apocrypha already in existence? I suggest someone goes and merges this page with the other one. --Pennwisedom 17:23, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Missing section on how to center the screen.

I still haven't figured out how to reliably center the map on a certain point to enable easy screen rotation. Can you please add something like that?

  • Clicking on a celestial object centers on the object. Also, clicking on the probe label next to the probe, centers on that probe. --Nareg Maxence 17:49, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Cosmic signatures are no longer within 4 AU from a planet

According to comments by CCP Prism X here

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1022106&page=1#12

and here

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1022106&page=1#21

the distance to nearest planet now depends on the type of signature and can be more that 4 AU away. --Nareg Maxence 17:46, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Removed the misleading info. --ISD BH Lenider 21:32, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

is it just me or is the text lines abit to long

I can't read this page on a 19" and it looks bad if i print it, plz clean it up abit

This seems to be a problem with Internet Explorer and the large images. Opera and Firefox display the page correctly. I have no idea on how to fix it... --ISD BH Lenider 14:39, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

need to fix old scanning guide

Missing "group" explanations

It would be very useful if this page also explained what kind of site the various groups are. I have no idea what a LADAR site is for example.

Probing

Is there a way to have this as a training video? I know you can find videos on youtube but, can't CCP make the video, be more authentic.

A bit that's misleading

If my understanding and experience with probing is anything to go by, I think there are a couple of bits in this article that are misleading with regard to the red spheres that appear inside a probe's scan range.

The article suggests that the location of your target is somwhere WITHIN that red sphere, as suggested in this text:

"It can be near either one of the outer planets within range of the original probe, or it might be close to the cluster of planets near the center point of the original probing location."

I think this is wrong. The possible locations of the site are anywhere on the SURFACE of the red sphere, give or take a bit according to scan accuracy, as the probe only knows the rough distance to the site.

Hence, further into the example, the probe site is actually nowhere near the centre of the system, it's on the opposite site to the two planets and exactly where it should be given the original single probe's red sphere surface.

Don't mean to be pedantic but this might make people launch loads of probes inside a red sphere without them realising that the site will always be somewhere around the edge of it and not actually IN it.

TG

No mention of shift-clicking to move all probes at once!

This tip is very useful and greatly helps to reduce probing time. It should be mentioned somewhere in the article that holding shift while moving a probe will move all probes at the same time.

Tip to add

It's possible to use the directional scanner in order to find out if another player is trying to probe your ship. Simply set the directional scanner to 360 degrees, and set the range to something around 1-2.5AU (150,000 km - 375,000 km) and scan.

Make sure the "use overview settings" checkbox is unchecked.

If anyone is trying to probe you down, you should see Combat Probes listed in the scan results.

Page Name

Shouldnt it be changed to just "probing" .... we're way past Apocrypha. --ingenting 09:31, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
