Wormholes are one of the major features in the upcoming Eve Online: Apocrypha, the 10th free expansion for Eve Online. Players will be able to track down wormholes using new scanning techniques, skills, and equipment. These wormholes could lead to almost anywhere in New Eden.

Thousands of new solar systems, colloquially referred to as Wormhole Space, will be accessible for the first time. Players will find new resources in these systems, whose artifacts and products will pave the way to new Tech 3 ships and technologies.

Speculation and Comments

With the appearance of unstable Wormholes a new scanning system is being developed. While little is known, the information released hints towards a split into two new types of launchers, combat and exploration. Exploration will have low fitting requirements and be easily attachable to most ships and will only be able to probe out exploration sites. Combat will have higher fitting requirements and will be able to find ships and drones. Other hinted changes are:

  • You will be able to drop more than one probe in a grid
  • Probe scan ranges can be adjusted via a drag and drop interface in the 3D map, removing the need for multiple probe types
  • Probes can be repositioned in the solar system map using a drag and drop interface and will warp to their specified positions
  • Scanning will now use triangulation to refine and improve accuracy of scan results
  • You can recall probes for re-use at a later point and time
  • The transition from ship view to 3D Solar System view to Universe Map view has been made near instant, allowing for quick switching between them.

Current launchers and probes and their blueprints will be converted to the new models.

You will find wormholes both in empire and null sec space although the 0.0 kind of wormhole may lead to more juicier Wormhole-space. New NPCs will be introduced, their salvage and loot will be some of the components required for T3 construction. Control towers can be anchored in these systems, but you cannot obtain sovereignty in them.

You will need to use wormholes (which work in a two-way fashion) in order to access wormhole space (W-space). Wormholes will be unstable and will close after either a certain time or when a certain amount of mass has traveled through the wormhole. Information about the remaining time and allowed mass will be known before entering a wormhole, and "your ship's computer will give you a fairly strong hint as to what sort of space a wormhole's likely to lead to when you approach it". Capital ships will be able to use some of the larger wormholes. Pilots may be stranded in W-space if their entry wormhole collapses thus requiring the pilot to find another wormhole.

It must be noted that you will not be able to use cynos to jump in or out of the wormhole space, but there will always be a wormhole back to known space (K-space) within a few jumps of your location. Wormhole destinations will change every time they are created and it may just be possible to arrive to Empire from null sec (and vice versa) via a (un)lucky chain of wormholes, although measures are being taken to prevent capital ships from reaching Empire (Empire wormholes won't allow big ships through). Some wormholes in W-space will lead further into other W-space systems and similarly wormholes in K-space may once in a while also lead to different parts of K-space.

W-Space is similar to 0.0 and thus have few restrictions. It has some limitations compared to normal 0.0 space. You will not be able to claim sovereignty on it, cyno and jumpdrive will not work. The W-space systems will not be named and your universe map will be of little use to determine where you have landed. You will be able to use bookmarks in W-space. You will be able to setup POS althought you may have problem fueling them given the uncertaint nature of Wormhole links. There will be no ice-belts in the wormholes in their current form, making refuelling of POS's harder.

The exact content of W-space is subject to speculation but new NPC's, new exploration content and new pockets of resources was mentioned.

If you are unable to look for wormholes while being in W-space (if for example you lose the scanning ship of your fleet) you'll be stuck ..... although selfdestruction may allow you to get back to your clone in K-space. Note that the opposite (jumping to a clone in W-space) won't be allowed. The only way to reach W-space is via a wormhole.
