EVE's four empires started out as colonies far from Earth. Access to Earth was cut off and the colonies were left to fend for themselves. They collapsed, civilization regressed, and from the dust eventually arose the four major forces that govern New Eden today: The Amarr Empire, the Minmatar Republic, the Gallente Federation and the Caldari State. A fifth nation, the elusive and powerful Jovian Empire, has been hovering around the edges for a while, but they keep their affairs shrouded in secrecy.

The early human history of the [[New Eden]] cluster remains a topic of much speculation. There is little substantive evidence to guide discussion, as vanishingly few artifacts have survived to tell of times before the rise of the four modern empires. The story of those four empires, however, has been shaped by four key events – two meetings, and the two wars they precipitated.

The Amarr are a massive, slave-driving theocracy. The Minmatar are their former slaves, a rebellious coalition of tribes who have not forgiven their past masters. The Gallente are the democratic hedonists of New Eden, while their old war opponents, the Caldari, are their militaristic, rigid counterparts.

It should be noted that Amarr slavery of Minmatar people still exists and is very much a current issue, while the Gallente-Caldari war is a thing of the past and holds far less political weight. The current state of the universe is one of approaching war.

EVE takes place in New Eden, a cluster of stars far from mankind's original habitat, planet Earth. How far away - and whether or not that cradle of civilization still exists - is a mystery. Humans originally arrived through a natural wormhole. Gazing upon alien heavens they had never before seen, they were completely unable to determine where this new world was located. From the New Eden solar system, where the gate of EVE led to the old world, humans expanded in all directions at a furious pace, exploring and colonizing rapidly.

The natural wormhole that led mankind to New Eden was soon deemed too unstable to sustain massive traffic for any extended period. It was thus decided that in order to fully exploit the opportunities that the new world offered to the stagnant venue of old Earth, a stargate linking the two worlds would need to be built. The construction of the EVE Gate was the largest, most massive undertaking ever attempted by mankind and it took more than 200 years to complete. At some point during that period the natural wormhole collapsed, but the construction continued, as people had foreseen the collapse.

Since this was widely viewed as a new beginning for mankind, the solar system where the EVE Gate was located on the new side was given the name of New Eden, a name which has since spread to refer to the entire cluster. But the EVE Gate only stayed open for 70 years after completion. Then, in a catastrophe of a scale never before witnessed by the human race, the gate unexpectedly collapsed, ruining the New Eden system in the process. Thousands of small colonies were left to fend for themselves in complete isolatio, cut off from the old world. For millennia they endured, clinging to the brink of extinction. Only a handful managed to survive.

In this uneasy peace, the four empires sought some measure of stability while they took stock of their situations, and eventually that stability was provided by the formation of [[CONCORD_(NPC_corporation)|CONCORD]]. Of those that lasted, five were to rise up and become the major empires that, between them, hold the balance of power in New Eden. Today, they are known as the Amarr Empire, the Gallente Federation, the Caldari State, the Minmatar Republic, and the Jovian Empire. Additionally, the universe is full of several small, independent factions and states. The Amarr initially conquered and enslaved the Minmatar, while the Gallente incorporated the Caldari. The Caldari eventually started a war with the Gallente, during which the Gallente government was toppled, the Caldari were forced to flee their home planet, and the Gallente had their own home planet bombarded with a Caldari spaceship on a suicide run. The four Empires then came into contact with the Jove, with whom the Amarr started a brief and futile war. The Minmatar seized on the Amarrians' distraction with their Jove war, rebelled, succeeded for the most part (with secret assistance from the Gallente) and achieved independence.

For more than a century, the five empires have lived together in relative peace. They've continually striven to maintain this state of affairs, as each faction realizes only too well the grave consequences of a massive interstellar war. Recent technological breakthroughs in FTL travel - and the ensuing increase in space travelers - have shaken the fragile peace.

New Eden Historical Overview

CONCORD Assembly.jpg

The early human history of the New Eden cluster remains a topic of much speculation. There is little substantive evidence to guide discussion, as vanishingly few artifacts have survived to tell of times before the rise of the four modern empires. The story of those four empires, however, has been shaped by four key events – two meetings, and the two wars they precipitated.

The first, now a thousand years past, was the meeting between the Amarr and the Minmatar. The Amarr, by this time already an expansive imperial theocracy controlling dozens of star systems, stumbled across the Minmatar while the latter were still exploring their home system. Over the next century the Amarrians, in keeping with the teachings of their rigidly stabilizing priesthood, returned with increasing frequency to forcibly acquire workers from the growing Minmatar nation. These raids culminated in the wholesale invasion, annexation and enslavement of the entire Minmatar civilization some nine hundred years ago.

The second meeting begun on a more equitable footing, when the Gallente confirmed the existence of another civilization, now known as the Caldari, on a neighboring planet within their home system. Where Gallente Prime was a comfortable, temperate planet, Caldari Prime was a barely-habitable iceworld, which dictated both the relative advancement of the two peoples, and the tone of their respective cultures. The Gallente, even then approaching foreign affairs with an air of slightly overbearing indulgence, gladly welcomed the Caldari as trading partners and shared with them many enabling technologies, allowing both civilizations to grow side-by-side in an slowly-expanding coalition of disparate societies that would soon coalesce into the Gallente Federation.

As they grew together, however, these two peoples increasingly grew apart. The liberal, individualistic and easy-going Gallente had never really meshed well with the hardy, organized and communalistic Caldari, and as time progressed and their goals diverged, the strains in their relationship became chronic. Events came to a head in the brutal and protracted Gallente-Caldari War , which squandered much blood and treasure and eventually forced the Caldari to flee their ancestral homeworld. Indeed, as a society the Caldari were only saved by the substantial resources and inspired leadership of their monolithic mega-corporations, who led their people to new homes around distant stars. Eventually a fragile peace settled between the newly-founded Caldari State and the still-expanding Gallente Federation, but neither side has forgotten or forgiven.

That was the first war. The second was precipitated by the action, or inaction, of the fifth major player in cluster politics – the enigmatic Jovians, who say very little, but cast a long shadow. When their faces were still new to the four Empires, and their prowess was unmeasured, the Amarrians sought to subjugate them as they had countless other cultures since the conquest of the Minmatar. At the Battle of Vak’Atioth, a lone Jovian mothership savaged the combined Amarrian fleet. With the Amarr Empire reeling from the magnitude of their military failure, the Minmatar decided that their moment had come. All across the Amarrian slave-holdings, indentured Minmatar rose up and threw off their shackles. The Empire, unable to react promptly enough to quell the massive rebellion, were forced to withdraw from a huge swathe of worlds where Minmatar slaves had dominated the workforce. These regions of space in time became the Minmatar Republic, a Gallente-backed political experiment uniting four of the seven Minmatar Tribes under a democratic government. While both the Minmatar Republic and the Amarr Empire retreated to lick their wounds and rebuild, both feel they have unfinished business that cannot be ignored indefinitely.

In this uneasy peace, the four empires sought some measure of stability while they took stock of their situations, and eventually that stability was provided by the formation of CONCORD. With the quiet assistance of the Jovians, the empires came to agreements on trade, communication and diplomacy, and together created the CONCORD assembly and its subordinate divisions to oversee and administer interstellar relations. Today CONCORD continues to support and manage many aspects of modern life where co-operation between empires is a necessity, and its expanded mandate from the five founding empires makes its five-pointed star a familiar and respected sight all throughout the New Eden Cluster.
