Introduction
Welcome to the Ancient Races department of the Arek'Jaalan Project which conducts research studies into the history, technology and culture of the Takmahl and Yan Jung and set them into context with the other parts of the research program. One of our chief objectives is to establish a time line of the history of the ancient races to provide an over arching historical context to the specifics of other research divisions. With the material currently available it is difficult to make direct connections between the ancient races and their relation to one another. But, knowing the high technological skill of these ancient civilizations it is very unlikely they were completely unaware of each others presence.
From the artifacts left behind by the various ancient civilizations it appears they possessed a level of technological understanding that since has been forgotten. In some cases this level appears to have been greater than our current one and effort has been done to try and improve standard design patterns by applying some of the old methods into the construction resulting in a new sort of "hybrid" technology modules.[1] Our limited understanding on how the ancient technologies work prevents us from reproducing the ancient components and, as result, forces the hybrid module designs to require original ancient artifacts in their construction. As the major part of the functional design is still mostly from the standard design there is no added skill difficulty for a capsuleer to operate a hybrid module. Also, as we are limited to only draw rudimentary knowledge from the artifacts we find it is possible that maybe not all of the ancient components are being used for their intended purposes. While generally more cost efficient in regard to power and CPU requirements than the standard level modules they are often about as powerful/efficient as modules enhanced by moon harvested materials and less than those sold by the various New Eden factions.[1][2][3][4]
While not directly in focus of this research, the Amarr Empire will often appear both as a source of ancient texts and in discussions. This is due to the fact that the Amarr Empire was one of the first to recover from The Dark Ages[5] after the collapse of the EVE Gate and have a long tradition of gathering and preserving historical texts. The Theology Council keeps a firm watch on what can and cannot be revealed to the public though, and will in some cases condemn the material as heretical and actively pursue the destruction of it. With the age of the Amarr Empire (approx. 7000 years) it can in some cases be regarded as an "ancient race" too. A recent find by this department implies the existence of information retained by major organizations in New Eden on cashes of ancient equipment, but to what extent is unknown.[6]
All information provided here is based on the most recent knowledge within the field and is subject to update when new finds present themselves.

History
The Takmahl were once part of the Amarr Empire, but were exiled long ago, shortly after the Amarrians took to space again. The Takmahl were considered heretics of the worst sort, some calling them the predecessors of the Blood Raider cult.[8]
For centuries nothing was heard from them, but not long ago relics were found in the Araz constellation that show that the Takmahl had a thriving culture for many centuries after their departure from the Amarr Empire. Yet, at some point they died out, for reasons unknown. Archaeologists and treasure seekers from all over have since convened in Araz, dreaming of uncovering the secrets of the Takmahl, or more precisely, their fabled treasures.
Discussion
The Takmahl were a pious people, producing many religious texts and sculptures of Amarrian deities.[9][10] These are considered highly heretical in nature by Amarrian theologists and are being sought out and destroyed by Amarrian authorities. If this hunt is motivated by religious beliefs only or a desire to keep knowledge hidden has yet to be revealed.
Evidence suggest that the ancient texts of the Takmahl were eventually gathered into The Apocryphon which is one of the theological foundations of the Blood Raider pirates and, to a further extent, the Sani Sabik cult. Though, evidently, the Sani Sabik came into existence long before the Amarrians returned to space.[11] It is possible the Takmahl were a part of the Amarrian elite devoted to Sani Sabik, therefore having to emigrate to avoid persecution. Further, being the elite, it is possible these people possessed knowledge the Amarrian authorities had a special interest in putting to rest. The Takmahl being among the Amarrain elite, is supported by their technological specialization as well, as cybernetics and and bio-engineering were (and still are) skills highly sought by the Amarrian upper class (the holders) due to their dim view on cloning technology for prolonging life.[12] Further, the technological artifacts left behind by the Takmahl has been found to be useful to enhance spaceship armor technology to a level greater than standard[2] equipment of today proving that the Takmahl certainly not were without, for their time, high skilled abilities.[1]
The Takmahl tried to hide their most precious artifacts within a deadspace pocket close to the sun in the Aphi solar system. Though, designating the complex as the "Labyrinth" and designing the interior of the complex like a maze have still not prevented poachers from entering the inner temple and access to the technology left behind by the Takmahl. The Project Theseus had as goal to chart this complex and make a map of its layout. Information on the outcome of this project can be found in the Finished Research Topics and Papers section below.
While often being labeled as one of the four ancient races, the Takmahl distinguish themselves from the other three in the following ways: It appears the Takmahl were a splinter group of Amarrian citizens and therefore not a distinct ethnic group that came through the EVE Gate. In fact, the Takmahl seem only to have appeared as a distinct group long after the closure of the Gate (when the Amarrians returned to space). At this time the Sleeper civilization appears to have already been in ruins.[13]

History
The Yan Jung nation immigrated into New Eden through the EVE Gate eons ago. From where, is unknown, though the fragments of text it has been possible to translate talk about a mysterious "middle kingdom". The Yan Jungs settled in the system of Deltole, though it is suspected they also colonized other systems, even in far off places. The planets of Deltole V and VI appears to have been in particular inhabitable for the Yan Jungs. The reason for their disappearance remains unknown.[15]
Discussion
While the Yan Jung nation seemingly disappeared millennia ago some of their machinery is still found and operational to this very day.[16] Though built for the purpose of defense, the machinery appears to have a weakness against Electro Magnetic damage types.[17]
The artifacts left behind by the Yan Jungs has helped to the development of hybrid modules with improved armor reconstruction and resistance abilities and samples from their advanced gravity field theories have been used to enhance computer CPUs.
An interesting issue, regarding the possible utilization of Yan Jung technology, was the reported ability of a hive of rogue drones living in the Algintal constellation to interact with the Yan Jung technology and to assimilate it thereby enhancing communication and cognitive abilities resulting in the development of a new strain of rogue drones.[18] The research project covering the findings of an investigation on these drones can be found under The Rogue Drone Strain in Algintal project in the Finished Research Topics and Papers section below.
